Wine from the discount stores: you Can taste the cheap wines, really?

For less than five euros, there is a red or white wine at discounters for example Aldi, Lidl, Netto and Penny. Can convince the cheap wines actually taste? The NDR-consumer shipment, “the market” has taken on this question. The Result? Sommelier Stephanie Döring is not convinced by the cheap wines, in the production is often faked. “You can make out of inferior grapes and grape juice to wine. With artificial yeasts and acid, which can be”, says the expert.

in fact, there are products on the market to improve the quality of wines. These are, for example, additives such as tannins or aromatic wood chips. Fatal is that these additives need not be declared. You can read more about this here.

In the Test, three different types of grape, the cheer in the disco (Aldi, Lidl, Penny offered, net), including Riesling, red Bordeaux, Australian Chardonnay. The “NDR” wanted to know by the traders, whether or not the wine contains additives that do not need to be declared. Penny writes to demand that their Chardonnay was produced with specially cultured yeasts. The typical woody notes in the Chardonnay will be supported “through the use of wood chips”. The Aldi Chardonnay without the “wood-notes”, which was deliberately designed so “” says Aldi.

All of the wines were sent to the lab to find out how it behaves with the alcohol content. The Rieslings, two Chardonnays, and two Bordeaux wines have more percent alcohol by volume than is actually declared. The Reasoning? The discounters were in the legal framework, rounding is allowed. That’s true. Of the nine wines tested, but only two cut in the flavor profile well. The Riesling from Aldi for € 2.79 and the Bordeaux of the net for 4.99 euros, and even this is atypical for a Bordeaux tasted. Therefore, it is not always easy to find a good cheap wine.
